[A little later in the evening is the perfect time to rummage through the Howling Rose. Inspecting the ammunition in the area with cannons, Rufus lifts his head when he hears footfalls nearby.

"Oh," his face seems to say, "it's just you."]

[lionson]

[Don't mind him, he's just sitting on one of the ammunition crates. He seems to have looted a bottle of liquor from the pub, but he's not drinking yet.]

Fancy seeing you here! If you're looking for guns, sorry to disappoint. Everything here is for the cannons.

[He's cheerful, if nothing else?]

[soulus]

[Too cheerful.]

Do you not know how to fire a cannon?

[lionson]

I do, actually. Cannons fall under my area of study in the church.

You interested in using one?

[soulus]

I know how to use one.

When was the last time you used them?

[lionson]

Hmm...probably back during my school days. They're not exactly a popular weapon in the modern era. Bazookas, now, that's something I've used a few times.

[soulus]

You must be quite active.

[lionson]

Yep~ I'm an upper-first-class exorcist. Pretty much the highest you can go, before you get to the special-named ranks. I had to learn a lot of stuff to get that far.

I am not at all objecting to the lack of bazookas here, though. Some kid would pick it up and make a mess.

[soulus]

Adults can make a mess as well . . .

[Probably even bigger messes.]

[lionson]

Ahh, that's true. Adults who don't know how to use them would make a mess too. And probably a bigger one, since adults are often overconfident.

[soulus]

. . . When I was a child . . . someone told me that only bad adults use guns.

Unlike most children, the messes we create are deliberate.

[lionson]

[Ah. Now there's a thought.]

'Only bad adults use guns', huh? I guess I never considered how it must look to those on the other side of it.

[Thinky-thoughts there. Something something 'to others, we're the monsters'.]

[soulus]

No. I was the one on the other side. He told me that to make me drop the gun.

[lionson]

Did it work?

[soulus]

No. His attempt to buy the gun off of me failed.

[lionson]

...so you had a gun, and he tried to buy it, saying that only bad adults had guns?

[wtf was your childhood, Rufus?]

[soulus]

Yes.

[He doesn't see what's so confusing here.]

[lionson]

Right, okay. Just making sure I understood how things went there.

[He pauses for a moment, and then:]

Who was he? Someone important?

[soulus]

. . . No. He was nobody important.

[lionson]

Aah. See, I was asking because you seem to recall it pretty clearly, and usually if a person recalls something like that, it's important to them.

[soulus]

That was the day I started working as a bounty hunter. The people involved weren't important.

[lionson]

No? We have been losing memories, is it possible that's one you lost?

[soulus]

No. I know which memories I've lost. That one is completely intact.

[lionson]

Really? You know all three?

[And then after a moment, he adds:]

I'm only asking because I've only figured out one of mine, and it's amazing to me that people can figure out all of theirs.

[soulus]

Which one is that?
