Week 2, Wednesday

[lionson]

[Come to confession, Hilda. Shiro has been dealing with shitposts all day, so a change in pace would be nice.]

[ she may be fantasy catholic, but she's not very pious—mostly the sign gets her attention because it's... interesting? it's interesting. ]

I'm sure you've been asked this already, but do you really think this might work?

[ she sounds genuinely curious. ]

No one's going to admit to that kind of stuff just because you ask nicely.

It probably won't work, but 'probably' doesn't mean 'definitely'. I'd like to give everyone a chance though. Killing someone, it's a heavy burden. And I'm sure whoever did it had their reasons. So having a place to talk about it without a fear of everyone else finding out might encourage them to come forward.

I'm more interested in finding out 'why' and trying to stop further murders than in some misguided notion of 'justice'. So, a confessional it is.

That's... generous. [ naive? she looks dubious, but when she gets close enough her emotions are more amused, a little endeared at the thought, even if her own feelings are less optimistic. ] But honestly? I agree. I don't think we're going to make it very far if we're caught up trying to get an eye for an eye.

[ there is a thread of something more somber though, as her memories drift backward. ]

You were pretty upset about Kano though, weren't you? I thought you'd be more angry at whoever went around killing people on Saturday.

[lionson]

I'm more upset at him for pulling that stunt he did. I can understand why he did it, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

[Damn kids >T]

And I'll be angry if I found out people were killing just because they wanted to. But from what I've heard here, people might be coerced into killing. And someone killing under those circumstances is something I can sympathize with.

[ kids these days. speaking of, hilda listens along, nodding agreeably. ]

Honestly, I have no idea why Kano did what he did. I don't get it at all. [ kano's actions are a total mystery to her, even as she watched it all go down. ] Buuuut... I think I could tell you a little more about what happened to the other two.

[ for all that people have been pulling his leg today, hilda doesn't actually sound like she's joking. ]

Odds are that he wouldn't explain even if someone asked. That kid has some pretty unique ways of thinking about things.

[Unique, frustrating ways.

He does seem interested at the rest though, and he nods.]

Sure. What do you know about them?

[ Hilda just smiles a little ruefully at that, sad. It's a little too late to ask Kano anyway.

At least they still have time to talk about this. Though she holds up a finger, wagging it a little. ]

Nope—not so fast, your priestliness. How do I know I can trust you? I'm ready to spill my heart out, but I need a little incentive.

[ She ponders for a moment, thinking up a show of faith. ]

How about... you tell me what team you're on? If you haven't hit your weekly limit already.

[lionson]

[Ah. Information for information, then.]

You'll have to tell me what the weekly limit is, because I have shared it this week already but I wasn't aware of a limit.

[axecessory]

[ sorry father, she's not the type to give anything away for free. ]

It's three, apparently. I haven't tried to see what happens if you go over the limit, and I'm not keen on finding out.

[lionson]

Well, you're in luck. I haven't told three people yet this week.

I'm on Wolf's team.

[axecessory]

Oh, nice. [ she seems pleased to know this? and she is nothing if not fair—honestly, the gesture of good will is important, because she knows this is sensitive stuff. why else would he have to offer some private confessional? ] Okay then, first off—I've heard it confirmed that Sharon's death was because she attacked first. It was self-defense.

[lionson]

[He is nothing if not accommodating. This is a secret he is fine with sharing anyway, so long as he doesn't get punished for it. The game isn't that important to him.]

You know, I'm not surprised by that. Especially considering the direction everything went during the trial.

That answers why the killer killed, but it doesn't answer why Sharon attacked in the first place.

[If he's slightly disappointed, it's because he can't ask Sharon 'why'.]

[axecessory]

[ she watches his reaction carefully, letting out a quiet hum in response. ]

From the sounds of it, it was something personal to her. I guess I can't say I'm surprised... people do all sorts of crazy things when they've lost something important.

[ she understands, though she doesn't exactly condone it. it's just the way things are in a ridiculous 'competition' like the one this has become. ]

I think practically everyone here has something they'd kill to get back, though personally I think it's a little hasty to go murdering someone for it.

[lionson]

[He hums thoughtfully, considering his options before he asks:]

How do you know? Had you been talking to her before she died?

[axecessory]

Nope. I've actually never spoken to her.

[ which is why she can deal with this without getting too emotional about it. ]

But when I confirmed what happened with her death, I heard a few of the details. Honestly—it's not my place to judge, and it doesn't sound like you do, either. So I figure it wouldn't hurt to tell you. Though... I guess it probably doesn't bring you much peace knowing, either.

[lionson]

It would bring me a bit more peace if I could find out who is providing these motivations to murder. That's the piece I'm missing here, and that's who I really want to yell at.

[axecessory]

Oh, you don't think it's murder out of selfish whimsy? A lot of people do.

[ she doesn't sound convinced, though. ]

[lionson]

I think I don't have enough information to make that kind of a call.

[axecessory]

[ well, if it's information he needs... ]

Let's move onto Cater's death, then—as far as I've heard, she was killed specifically to avoid something worse from happening.

[ she drums her fingers against her leg, calm, but with a note of sadness in her voice. she didn't know sharon or cater, but it's still a messed up situation. ]

I don't have the details to say how selfless anything is... I doubt that any of this was done out of altruism, honestly. But nothing about this whole competition is especially noble to me.

Week 2, post-trial

[lionson]

[After that trial, he needs a drink. And yes, he's stepping around the mess in the pub to loot some booze.]

At least I still have this vice to indulge in-

[Oh, there's Hilda.]

Oh, hi.

[ she waves from where she's sitting on a counter somewhere, armed with a bottle of wine. ]

Hey there.

[ she smiles, good-natured, though her voice has a tired edge to it. ]

Are holy men even allowed to step foot in places like this? Isn't it a den of sin or whatever?

[lionson]

God forgives all who repent, and I can repent tomorrow. Besides, it's not my first time hanging around bars. God should just be happy that I'm not on the hunt for floozies.

[axecessory]

[ she laughs a little. god's standards of good behavior must be relative. ]

Oh, I like that. Does that mean I can indulge in a little vice so long as I'm really good about praying in the morning?

[lionson]

Yep! That's what praying for forgiveness is for.

Though I'd say, indulge in vices that don't hurt others. Those are easier to forgive.
